NEW TANNIN SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT FOR FABA BEAN SECTOR
As the leader in Canadian faba bean seed testing, our SGS Sherwood Park team has responded to the requests of breeders and seed companies by expanding our testing capabilities. We are proud to announce the addition of tannin testing, a crucial diagnostic tool for evaluating breeding lines and seed production. In addition to testing whole faba bean seeds, our expertise now extends to testing flakes and powder. Choose SGS for reliable and precise testing of convicine, vicine, and tannin levels in faba beans

THOUSAND KERNEL WEIGHT KEY TO TARGET PLANT STAND AND PROFITABILITY
Since the establishment of our CFIA-accredited seed laboratory in 1996, we have continuously expanded our infrastructure and capacity to offer same-day testing for physical purity, pure seed, tetrazolium, and 1,000 kernel weight (TKW). Our broad geographic reach has provided us with valuable insights into a wide range of seed quality results. Notably, we have observed significant variability in TKW results for the 2024 seed crop. For example, wheat TKW in western Canada has ranged from 20 to 52 grams per 1,000 seeds, while barley TKW has varied from 26 to 59 grams per 1,000 seeds. It is crucial to use seeding rate calculators and understand your TKW, as this directly impacts plant population and, ultimately, the profitability of your 2025 crop.

SOIL PATHOLOGY FOR PLANNING CROP AND RESEARCH SITE PLACEMENT
Have you finalized your 2025 crop rotation or are you planning field trial sites for the upcoming season? Whether you’re assessing disease factors or ensuring proper sanitation for field trial equipment, it’s essential to test your agricultural soil. Our services are ideal for pre-planting, offering targeted pathogen diagnostics to help you make informed decisions
