NUTRITIONAL ASSESSMENT FOR CORN SILAGE MANAGEMENT
As harvest of corn silage approaches, and the one-third milk line is visible, it is advantageous to monitor whole plant moisture content, as it is the most important factor in determining harvest timing.
Optimum whole plant moisture ranges by storage type:
• Piles, bags, and bunkers: 68-70%
• Tower silos: 64- 67%. Decrease by 2% for each 10 feet above the 60 foot silo height.
• Oxygen limiting silos: 58-62%
SGS has recently updated our NIR and wet chemistry packages and would be happy to help you select the most appropriate for your livestock nutrition requirements.
